What To Do If You Have Ringing In Your Ears

by Jessie Lin

Many women complain about hearing noise that comes from their ears. For some this is normal because it is natural for the body to produce sounds but for others, the noise can be too much and this can be a symptom of a more serious problem. The condition in which a person often hears a somewhat ringing noise in his ears is called tinnitus. This may not be readily noticed because the internal noise can be muffled by the external noise but you can determine whether you have tinnitus once you hear these ringing sounds when in a quiet place.

Tinnitus can be caused by several factors like infection and illnesses. These illnesses can range from problems that mainly concern the ears like damage to the tympanic membrane or ear drum to the severe ones like those involving the brain. Aside from these, the condition may arise due to old age or due to hearing too much noise. You should also be careful in taking medication unless recommended by your doctor. Make it a point to check the label of the prescription medicine before taking them because there are ingredients that are believed to cause people tinnitus. Too much noise can damage the ear drums, leading to tinnitus.  When you age, the ringing sounds can be caused by auditory deterioration.

You should immediately consult your doctor when you think that your ear problem is not normal. It is always better to be sure that it is not something serious. The doctor will obtain your medical history and have you undergo some tests in order to determine the root cause of the ringing sound from your ears. If the cause is still not determined after some basic tests, then you can undergo auditory brain stem response (ABR), computer tomography scan (CT scan) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to check whether you have any underlying brain illness.

After diagnosing your problem, the doctor can go ahead with the treatment.

Tinnitus can be treated by treating its main cause. For instance, if the noise you hear from your ear is caused by an infection, this has to be cured first before tinnitus goes away. Some people recommend the use of health supplements that have vitamins and minerals that are believed to reduce tinnitus but these have no scientific basis.

To prevent tinnitus, you must refrain from cleaning your ears using cotton swabs as these can push ear wax into the inner ear and become a breeding ground for bacteria that cam cause infection. You should also protect your ears from too much noise by using ear plugs or ear muffs.

Tinnitus just goes away after the main cause of the problem has been treated but of course, you have to take care of yourself so the problem with your ears would easily be gone. People nowadays are so used to having ear plugs in their ears while listening to music that is loud enough for the person beside them to the song they are listening to. You should avoid doing this because it weakens your ear drums and eventually damages it, leading to hearing loss.
